First ever Sponsored Rollerblade Comp. at FSP
Saturday the 26th of March saw us hosting our first ever sponsored competition by proline skates,. It was divided into three categories, Juniors, Open and expert.
It was a great day while the good weather hindered some of the people travelling to the event there where 18 entrants with 8 of these in the junior category. Other skaters had travelled from Cardiff, Barry and one from Pembroke to enter the competition in what is now South Wales' only indoor skate park.
The competition saw big air spins from the juniors, loads of tweaked back flips and grab spins from the open catergory and some high speed, high tech skating from the experts.
Opening up the day was the juniors, this was done in two heats with a final jam to decide.
The first heat saw a good effort from all (particularly with this being most of the junior's first competition) with Alex and Huw's solid grinds on the ledge putting them through to the final jam.
The second heat however was outstanding with Jordan laying down the gauntlet with perfect 360's and a fakie 540, this performance guaranteed Jordan's place in the final, Thomas secured his place with his smooth lines and solid style. Bailey also got through.
The final had, Jordan, Thomas, Bailey, Alex and Huw.

Junior Winners:
1st Jordan Murray
(on the Right)
2nd Thomas Jenkins
(In the Middle)
3rd Bailey Roach
(On the Left)
The standard of the junior comp blew everyone away and set the mark for the open skaters to beat!
Open Competition
Dean's first trick was a back flip over the jump box, setting the standard in the air. Dean went big every time taking falls left right and centre, this never slowed him down.
With tweaked backflips and high stalls on the vert wall he was quite the competition.
His ethos to the comp seemed to harder I fall the bigger I will go.
Everyone skated well determined not to be out skated by the junior class.
Matthew Gratland after only started back skating in the last couple of months was pulling off some high speed rail skating, airing over the flat section to land on the down section of the rail.
He then saw the inclined wallride and decided to go for a grind along the top.
With some excellent skating from all involved and only two minor injuries.
Bart Donabidowicz Skated Hard throughout the day, with a highly technical style, solid spins and a smooth fast pace. We watched him 360 the jump box to flatbank, pull off smooth technical grinds on the rail and the ledge.

Open Winners:
1st Bart Donabidowicz
(On the left)
2nd Dean Mcderitt
(In the middle)
3rd Matthew Gratland
(On the right)
Expert Competition
The expert competition was spiced up with the one off addition of a purpose grind box with gas pipe coping, ideal for the aggressive inliner. While only 3 entered they sure made the most of ripping up the park.
No flips to be found here, this was all about the technical inline skating. Lots of rail time and the made the most of that gas pipe grind box.
Chris Morris seems to find edges to grind in the most unlikely of places warping the world around to fit with his skating style. He was straight off the bat with a standing 360 into the flat bank. Blink and you miss it. To skate is to glide and he has got it down.
Brady Beaver spent most of his time sessioning the rail and grind boxes. He used the park to build up speed for his quick smooth grinds.
Rhys Hather stole the show, throwing down good fast spins with good body positions and amazing in air tweaks combined with the technical skating ability. To top it all off he makio'd a 1" ledge behind the mini ramp. It turns out if it sticks out, he can session it.
Expert Winners:
1st Rhys Hather
(On the far right)
2nd Brady Beever
(Second one in on the right)
3rd Chris Morris
(On the left)

Big Lottery Awards, The Big 7.
After battling against the odds to get from the semi finals against 10 other projects we made it to the finals, the top three in our catergory the top 21 in the country. After a nail biting evening we where dissappointed to walk away being piped at the post. We did well to get how far we got, hopefully we will be able to reapply in the future and take home the gold!
We walked away with roughly £1,400 which at this time is obviously a much needed boost to the finances.
Thank you for all the support from the Big Lottery promotions team inparticular Jackie Aplin. We would also like to thank the support of the local schools and their staff. Finally but by no means least the support of Chris Bryant MP Rhondda and Leighton Andrews AM Rhondda, your support with this and other projects means so much to us and your local community.
Donations - Thank you
Thank you to Tarvin Methodist for raising £300 for the Skate Park, It really is appreciated.

The history of F.S.P.
Ferndale Skate Park was founded by local community
minded residents of Tylorstown who were very concerned to see so
many young people ‘hanging around’ local bus shelters, on benches,
or down by the river with nothing to do and nowhere to go.
Consequently these young people were seen to being drawn into under
age drinking of alcohol, drug abuse and vulnerable to the exploiters
of such young people.
They like so many others hoped ‘someone’ would do
something to help these young people... but then decided rather than
wait they would try and provide a facility that these Young People
said they would like to have.
The group formed themselves into a Non Profit Making
Limited Company with a Voluntary Board of Directors, with the
assistance of the Wales Co-Operative Society, and applied for Grant
funding from the Big Lottery Reaching Out Grant, CFAP Welsh Office
Community Grant, Coalfields Regeneration Grant, and The Sports
Council of Wales. The Company was successful with all the Grants but
did not quite satisfy the Sports Council Grant body, so with the
help of the Coalfields who increased their grant funding, the
Sporting Marvels based in the Rhondda who through their linking with
the Skate Park enabled us to obtain a ‘last minute ‘grant from the
Garfield Weston Foundation, and the funding package completed by the
WCVA who provided the Company with their ‘first community
loan’.
It was a hard struggle for nearly two years but in July
2006 the Skate Park became a reality and the development of the Unit
began. Staff were interviewed and selected all within the local
community with priority given those who needed the opportunity of
employment most, again the main emphasis being with empathy with the
local Young People and their situations, ‘heart for the Youth and
Young Adults of the locality’.
The Skate Park’s aim is to be a safe haven for all, with
no smoking, no alcohol, no drugs allowed within or around it, with
caring, friendly staff.
The Skate Park opened its doors for the first time on
11th December 2006, and it has brought great joy to the Company to
see so many Young People come and enjoy the facilities provided
which include;
- Indoor Skateboarding
- Roller-blading
- BMX bike riding over professional ramps built by
Evolution Ramps.
- Pool on a slate bed pool table.
- Snack Cafeteria serving good hot food at very good
prices!
- Internet Cafe
- Xbox 360 on a projector
- Birthday parties can be held by special
arrangement.
